Yoke, 2010

Exhibition

Opened
28 August 2010
Format

A yoke is the wooden beam that binds a pair of oxen so that they can pull a load together. In Yoke it becomes an image of working life, and of labour shared, harnessed and spent.

The central work, A Good Egg, is a coin-operated machine. Visitors paid to turn its dial; an egg was released and smashed, and its yolk ran slowly down a spiral track. The viewer's own money sets the mechanism in motion, and the title's play on yoke and yolk keeps the burden and its product in the same word.
